Digital access to GP services

During June and July 2025, Healthwatch Calderdale and Healthwatch Kirklees heard from local people about their experiences of using digital tools to access GP services. This includes online systems such as PATCHS, SystmOnline, and AccuRx, as well as the NHS App. Digital access is now a bigger part of NHS services. National policy encourages a move from paper and phone to digital, aiming to save staff time, improve access and give people more control. This report looks at peopleโ€™s experiences of using online services to contact GP practices across Calderdale and Kirklees.

Understanding smoking, quitting, and health inequalities

Understanding the experiences of people who smoke and people who previously smoked helps shape effective support services. This engagement aimed to explore who smokes, why they continue, what might help them quit, and what factors supported people who quit in successfully stopping, all with a focus on health inequalities. The findings will inform Public Health and the system partners to shape and deliver the stop smoking service offer in Kirklees and wider stop smoking opportunities.

Opening doors: Enhancing hospital visits for patients, visitors, carers, and staff

Healthwatch Kirklees and Healthwatch Calderdale were asked by Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust (CHFT) to engage with people in our areas regarding the current visiting options at Calderdale Royal Hospital and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. Healthwatch and CHFT wanted to know what patients, visitors, carers, and staff feel about hospital visiting. They plan to use this feedback to shape the future visiting policy set by CHFT.

The engagement project gathered detailed feedback from a wide range of stakeholders, including patients, visitors, carers, and hospital staff. The objective was to identify areas for improvement in visiting times, visitor numbers, and accessibility, as well as to uncover potential barriers faced by different demographic groups.
