Pulmonary Rehabilitation in West Yorkshire: Understanding People’s Views

Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) is a programme that helps people with lung conditions manage breathlessness, improve their fitness, and feel more confident in everyday life. Between July and September 2025, five local Healthwatch teams worked together to ask residents how they perceived the term Pulmonary Rehabilitation and what kind of name would make the service more appealing.

Ethnically diverse people’s experiences of reablement and intermediate care services

Very few people from ethnically diverse backgrounds are accessing intermediate care and reablement and we wanted to understand the reasons for this.
We visited community groups, spoke to people who had experiences of needing additional support following discharge from hospital, and gathered feedback from staff who are involved in hospital discharge.

Leaving hospital: Experience of those needing reablement support at home or intermediate care

Hospital discharge is a common topic in the feedback Healthwatch receives. Our data shows that some people struggle when they are discharged without enough support, which can slow their recovery and increase the risk of being readmitted. Healthwatch Kirklees and Healthwatch Calderdale wanted to learn about people’s experiences with the different hospital discharge pathways.

Volunteering for all

Healthwatch Calderdale spoke to disabled people in the local community and organisations to understand how we could make volunteering more accessible. This is a partnership with Accessible Calderdale hosted by Visits Unlimited.

Community Champions – Domestic Abuse

Domestic abuse is a common issue in the UK, affecting around 2.1 million people in the year ending March 2023— approximately 1 in 5 adults. It includes physical, sexual, financial, psychological, and emotional abuse, regardless of gender or sexuality. These conversations show the knowledge and awareness around domestic abuse and making the people aware of support available.

Community Champions – Asthma Awareness

From October 2024 to January 2025, Third Sector Leaders and Community Champions engaged with local communities to get feedback regarding asthma awareness. Awareness of asthma, including its signs, symptoms and triggers is important for diagnosis and management. In these conversations, respondents identified whether or not they know what asthma is and if they have it.

Community Champions – Falls Data Insights

From September to November of 2024, Third Sector Leaders and Community Champions engaged with local communities to get feedback regarding falls. The feedback highlighted participants views, sentiments and knowledge regarding falls. The feedback also highlighted their reasons for not disclosing if they have experienced a fall.

Community champions – Cervical screenings 2024

From March to May 2024, Third Sector Leaders Community Champions assessed cervical screening uptake and barriers faced by women, while promoting the ‘speak with a midwife’ campaign. The data collected revealed access challenges and key outcomes from these discussions.

  • Barriers to accessing asthma support services

A total of 1,700 individual conversations were held plus Community Champions reached out to various segments of the community via group engagement, with a total of 76 group conversations. A total of 1,776 conversations.
